These are all time-savers for instructors. Conversely, it was discovered that the biggest concerns with student use center around critical thinking decay, inaccuracies in AI output, and loss of foundational skills.
Imagine a semester where an instructor, buried under administrative tasks and prep work, uses AI to generate a bank of assessment questions. On the other end, a student, struggling with foundational gaps and feeling the pressure of a high-stakes environment, uses AI to generate the answers. Those answers are then fed back into an AI auto-grader that assigns a score and updates the gradebook.
In this scenario, data has been exchanged. A “loop” has been closed. But, has any learning actually occurred? Or, have we simply created a silent classroom where algorithms talk to each other while humans drift further apart?

Educators are pragmatists; many cite the ability to reclaim hours spent on lesson prep as a primary reason to adopt new tools. They need efficiency to survive the current structural strain. The goal of EdTech shouldn’t be to see how much of the classroom we can automate. It should be to see how much time we can give back to the educator so they can do what they do best: mentor, inspire, and challenge.
