Challenge

Chalmers needed a digital grading tool for high-stakes, handwritten exams across all their departments that could integrate into existing backend systems, including Canvas and Ladok, without disrupting established workflows.

Solution

Chalmers selected Möbius Grading for its easy navigation, LaTeX support, multi-instructor grading, and DigitalEd’s willingness to adapt the platform to their existing scanning processes.

Results

Chalmers achieved a 70% digital grading adoption rate across 13 departments for scanned exams, with 100% of completed exams digitally returned to students via Canvas.

The Details

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, centrally administers approximately 100,000 high-stakes handwritten on-campus examinations each year. Having built an infrastructure integrating multiple interconnected systems, including Canvas LMS, scanning hardware, anonymous cover sheets, and Ladok, Chalmers needed to digitalize grading without altering its core processes.

“We thought we were almost finished technically, it was just the processes for digital grading that we had to do,” explained Per Skogsäter, Project Leader for the Möbius Grading implementation project. “When we started pilot tests of other tools, we saw they didn’t meet our needs. It was very important for us not to deviate from our established processes.”

After gathering requirements from examiners and teaching staff, Chalmers evaluated Möbius Grading based on peer recommendations from another university in the Nordics. Unlike other options, DigitalEd worked directly with Chalmers to adapt the platform to their existing backend workflows. Furthermore, Möbius Grading offered specialized features built for STEM and handwritten assessments, such as LaTeX support, comment libraries, and real-time collaborative co-grading.

“Möbius Grading was simple to use for our teaching staff. It’s an easy tool and easy to navigate. The possibility to co-grade, where five or more teachers correct exams at the same time, is very appreciated at our university.” Emelie Wennersand, Change Management Leader.

To drive adoption across all 13 academic departments, Chalmers executed a phased implementation strategy, starting with small summer pilots in 2025 before expanding to one department in the fall semester, six departments in early 2026, and finally university-wide in summer 2026. The team maintained open communication through bi-weekly digital forums. Once teachers experienced the tool, engagement skyrocketed. Today, 70% of all scanned exams are digitally graded through Möbius Grading, and 100% are digitally returned to students via their Canvas LMS.

Beyond adoption, examiners have seen tangible improvements in how grading gets done. For large courses in particular, the shift to digital has changed both the security and the consistency of the process.

“As an examiner for large courses, Möbius Grading has been an enormous help. The grading experience has become much more flexible for both me and my co-graders, while also providing a more secure process by eliminating the need to circulate stacks of exam papers. The quality of grading has improved as well, as the ability to use point-based comments provides clearer feedback and helps ensure that all exams are assessed consistently and fairly, regardless of whether it is exam number 1 or exam number 250.” Jim Brouzoulis, Examiner.

“All our teachers have been positively surprised by the functionality. The grading part has been the easiest component to implement across our entire process,” said Skogsäter. Chalmers attributes their success to clear internal requirements, gradual roll-outs, and active faculty engagement. “First, really list and have a discussion internally about what your needs are and what you really want, your requirements, and what you cannot deviate from,” he advised. Wennersand added, “Testing on a small scale through pilot trials is very good, as is meeting with teachers early to show them the possibilities of the tool. Communication is key.”
